The single strand

This is a lamp post at the Trivandrum museum campus (Napier museum, Kerala, India). It reminded me of the double helix model of DNA by Wtson and Crick (of course this is single stranded DNA). To take this picture in darkness demands a firm hand, since I did not have the luxury of a tripode stand or anything on to support my camera. Though it looks 'commonplace' this picture is the result of a number of trials. I selected this one out of 16.
DNA-Deoxy ribo Nucleic Acid is probably the most celeberated molecule. It is the back bone of life. In it is coded all the fundamental information of any living form (except a few viruses which have RNA as genetic material). The elucidation of the model of DNA in 1953 by Francis Crick and James Watson strirred up the whole biological sciences world. It lead to birth of the disciplines Molecular biology and Biotechnology.
You can also have a look at the original model of Watson and Crick at http://osulibrary.orst.edu/specialcollections/coll/pauling/dna/pictures/dna-model.html.
At http://www.ncbe.reading.ac.uk/DNA50/models.html an array of DNA models are available for sale.
