Guess...What...?

Can you guess what is this

Fresh out of the cocoon

This butterfly has just come out of its cocoon. Its wings were all crumpled when it came out. Once the blood (Haemolymph) started circulating through the vains, the wings unfolded and became shapely. I took this snap when the butterfly was making his last efforts to fly. The proboscis had not emerged from its mouth. After a few minutes he took to his wings and disappered, leaving behind the shell of the pupa which once was his protective sheath.

The single strand

This is a lamp post at the Trivandrum museum campus (Napier museum, Kerala, India). It reminded me of the double helix model of DNA by Wtson and Crick (of course this is single stranded DNA). To take this picture in darkness demands a firm hand, since I did not have the luxury of a tripode stand or anything on to support my camera. Though it looks 'commonplace' this picture is the result of a number of trials. I selected this one out of 16.
DNA-Deoxy ribo Nucleic Acid is probably the most celeberated molecule. It is the back bone of life. In it is coded all the fundamental information of any living form (except a few viruses which have RNA as genetic material). The elucidation of the model of DNA in 1953 by Francis Crick and James Watson strirred up the whole biological sciences world. It lead to birth of the disciplines Molecular biology and Biotechnology.
You can also have a look at the original model of Watson and Crick at http://osulibrary.orst.edu/specialcollections/coll/pauling/dna/pictures/dna-model.html.
At http://www.ncbe.reading.ac.uk/DNA50/models.html an array of DNA models are available for sale.

Shoo..........

Shoo away the mos.... I din't.
He was sitting on my hand and screwing down his stylet deep into my flesh, while I was struggling to take my camera out of its sheath. I wanted to have him his fill and shoot him when full. But he grew self conscious soon and left me with a nasty itch.

Kerala is under the grip of chikungunya and for the moment mosquito is the most dreaded creature under the Sun. The Government is up in arms against the MOS.

Mosquitoes are flies in the family Culicidae. Over 3,000 known species of mosquitoes exist worldwide. You can see some interesting video clips on the feeding behaviour of mosquitos at http://www-rci.rutgers.edu/~insects/mosvid.htm and for a more scientific discription look at http://www.entomology.cornell.edu
